QuotaSpot Disclaimer
Effective date: [EFFECTIVE DATE]
Please read this before you install QuotaSpot. It is part of the QuotaSpot Software Licence.
1. Changing your router is at your own risk
QuotaSpot runs on routers that use OpenWrt, free router software made by the OpenWrt community. Installing OpenWrt, or changing a router's software in any way:
- may void the router's warranty from the maker or the shop;
- can make the router unusable ("bricked") if something goes wrong - for example if power or the cable is lost during the update, the wrong file is used, or the hardware has a fault;
- removes the maker's own features, apps and settings, and the maker's support may no longer help you.
Installing the kit itself also changes the router's network, firewall and web-server settings. A mistake, a power cut or an unusual existing setup can leave the router or your internet connection not working until it is fixed or reset.
Before you start: use a router the free checker rates "Great fit", keep a copy of your current router settings, make sure you can reach the router with a network cable, and do not start during business hours.
2. The GL.iNet firmware switch is a beta
QuotaSpot Setup can switch a GL.iNet GL-MT3000 or GL-MT6000 from GL.iNet's firmware to standard OpenWrt. This feature is a beta. It has been tested on simulated (virtual) routers. [UPDATE WHEN TRUE: "and on real GL-MT3000 / GL-MT6000 hardware".]
It checks the firmware file before flashing and uses OpenWrt's own safety checks, but:
- if it is interrupted (power cut, cable unplugged, computer goes to sleep) the router can stop working;
- your old GL.iNet settings are not carried over. The settings backup the app saves on your computer can only be restored on GL.iNet's firmware.
If a router stops working, it can usually be recovered:
- GL.iNet's recovery guide (U-Boot web recovery): https://docs.gl-inet.com/router/en/4/faq/debrick/
- OpenWrt's failsafe and recovery documentation: https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/troubleshooting/failsafe_and_factory_reset
- your router's page in the OpenWrt Table of Hardware: https://openwrt.org/toh/start
Recovery needs a computer, a network cable and some patience. Our support is remote: we can point you to these guides and help by email, but we cannot repair, replace or pay for routers.
3. Remote setup sessions
If you buy Remote setup, we install QuotaSpot for you over a screen-share, but it is still your router and your computer, and the risks in sections 1 and 2 still apply:
- installing the kit changes the router's network, firewall and web-server settings, and the GL.iNet firmware switch replaces the router's firmware - the router can lose its current settings (Wi-Fi names, passwords, port forwards and other changes), and in rare cases may need recovery;
- you are responsible for keeping a backup of your router's settings and of anything else you need, before the session starts. Where QuotaSpot Setup saves a settings backup, it is kept on your computer;
- a session can be cut short by a power cut, an internet outage or a computer going to sleep. Keep the computer plugged in and connected by cable to the router;
- we work only on the one router in the order. We do not check, change or take responsibility for your other devices, networks or internet service;
- a completed session means the basic test passed at that time. It is not a promise that the setup will keep working after later changes, updates or hardware faults.
Our liability for Remote setup is limited as set out in the Terms of Sale.
4. What QuotaSpot does and does not do
- Each guest gets their own login and daily download and upload allowance. Allowances are checked about every 15 seconds during a session, so a guest can go slightly over before being cut off. The daily total is updated when a session ends.
- Guests are kept on a separate network from the business network and from the router's settings, as set up by the installer. Changing the router's settings afterwards can undo this.
- The guest login page and the admin panel use plain HTTP, which is normal for captive portals. That means a username and password typed on the login page are not protected by HTTPS encryption and could be seen by someone able to watch that network traffic. Advise guests not to reuse an important password, and give them Wi-Fi-only passwords.
- QuotaSpot is not a firewall product, content filter, antivirus or a full security system. Do not rely on it to protect sensitive data.
- There is no payment, voucher, SMS or social-media login.
5. No compliance claims - check your local law
We make no claim that QuotaSpot makes you compliant with any law, regulation or standard, including (but not limited to) HIPAA, GDPR or other data-protection laws, PCI DSS, or telecommunications, public Wi-Fi, consumer-protection or data-retention laws.
Many countries have rules for businesses that offer Wi-Fi to the public. Some require you to identify users (for example by ID or phone number), to register as a provider, or to keep connection logs for a set time; others limit what you may collect or how long you may keep it. QuotaSpot stores only what is described in our Privacy Policy and does not, by itself, identify people or keep the kind of logs such laws may require.
You are responsible for finding out and following the rules that apply where you offer Wi-Fi, and for telling your guests what data you keep. If in doubt, ask a local lawyer or your telecom regulator.
6. Hospitals, clinics and other sensitive places
QuotaSpot is designed for visitor and waiting-room guest Wi-Fi only. Do not use it for, or connect it to, clinical systems, medical devices, patient records, payment systems, or any network that carries confidential or safety-critical data. Keep the guest network completely separate from those systems, as the kit is designed to do, and have your IT provider check the setup.
7. Not affiliated
QuotaSpot is an independent product. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the OpenWrt project, the openNDS project or GL.iNet (GL Technologies). OpenWrt, GL.iNet, GL-MT3000 (Beryl AX) and GL-MT6000 (Flint 2) are names or trademarks of their owners and are used only to describe compatibility.
8. The compatibility checker
The free checker uses public data from the OpenWrt Table of Hardware and our own rules. It gives an estimate, not a guarantee. Router models, hardware versions and OpenWrt releases change, and the data can be incomplete or wrong. Always check your router's exact model and version.
9. Not professional advice
Our guides, emails and website content are general technical information. They are not legal, compliance, security or professional network-design advice.
